Using training wheels when learning to ride a bike
Training wheels are rather outdated nowadays when it comes to learning to ride a bike. Although in the past they were often used as a solution for insecure beginners, today's experience shows that they can be more of a hindrance. Children learn to keep their balance more quickly if they start with a balance bike or use the bike without pedals as a ‘balance bike’.
A balance bike naturally promotes the development of balance and coordination. Children practise steering and braking without having to rely on additional aids. This type of learning gives children the self-confidence they need to easily switch to a real bike later on.
Exceptions prove the rule
Of course, there are also exceptions. Training wheels can be useful in some cases, especially if a child needs a lot of time to find their balance. However, experience shows that in most cases children learn to ride faster and more safely if they are not dependent on training wheels from the outset.
Note on fitting training wheels
Training wheels cannot be fitted to many modern bike models, such as Woom, Kubikes or Academy Bikes, as these models have been specially designed for learning without aids.
However, you can purchase training wheels for your Cube or Puky bike from a dealer and fit them to our bike.
